The Peterson family’s Northern Michigan adventure began in March of 1993 with the purchase of Spencer Creek Fine Dining and the Spencer Creek Cafe in the village of Alden. After seven successful years of providing sustenance to the community we decided it was time to move closer to our home in Bellaire. It was then in 2008 that we, Bill and Cathy, opened Moka, a bakery and coffee shop which specializes in fine homemade baked goods and house roasted coffee.
Our dream was platters of beautifully crafted fruit tarts, opening early and closing by 3pm. As it turned out, the community was dreaming of brownies, cookies, lemon bars, gourmet sandwiches and hand crafted pizza! They also wanted Moka to open early, close late, and operate seven days a week. So that is what we do.
We knew from the start that we wanted Moka to become an integral part of the Bellaire community–a place where locals and tourists alike would feel welcomed either alone or in groups and be comfortable coming in and hanging out. To encourage this, we provide wifi, a cozy fireplace, upbeat and friendly staff, books, newspapers and cable TV!
In 2014 we expanded our business to include Starlight Lounge in the unused second section of our building at the corner of Cayuga and Bridge Streets. Again, we wanted to offer the same welcoming feeling that Moka is known for–this time with cocktails! Starlight is the PM to Moka’s AM….mysteriously dark and filled with specialty lighting and original art to contrast with Moka’s light and window filled space. Our tap beers include local favorites such as Short’s, specialty cocktails and well drinks, a fun filled happy hour and a small plate menu featuring such items as sliders, shrimp, meatballs and fried Brie. The same casual and friendly atmosphere characterizes both spaces. Our goal for both Moka and Starlight is to provide our community with the best in food and drink in a warm and welcoming space that encourages everyone who comes by to stay and enjoy our lovingly prepared fare.
